Tearis and Nevallia

This was my first attempt at Sci-Fi writing about 10 years ago or so. Enjoy!

Chapter 1

Tearis had woken up hours before, but laid there without moving. He was thinking about the events of the evening before, or trying to remember them rather, because he couldn’t recall why there was a naked woman sound asleep next to him. Not that he minded waking next to a beautiful unclothed woman, but he determined that it was going to be awkward when she awoke and he didn’t know her name.

He stared at the ceiling as he remembered the night before when everyone was gathering at Boar’s Head, the tavern in town. He had invited a nearby guild to celebrate their close longevity as allies. The leader of that guild was a close friend of Tearis’, even as young boys.

He also remembered a lengthy discussion of Edinburgh and how it has grown. The people and the land of Edinburgh before the “new worlds” were discovered. Edinburgh was a peaceful place where the people all had mutual respect for one another and the land they occupied. There was anger, violence, and war such as any land, though Edinburgh has a system, a system that worked. Hate created allies and allies created fear. Fear is what kept the respect in Edinburgh.

The system didn’t last; however, as new worlds were found and new people came to Edinburgh. The new people came with new wars that weren’t there before. Creating a rift in the system that caused the allies to no long trust each other. Tearis thought of his village, they seemed to grow by the day. They had settled not long ago in a valley in the Tersida Mountains, not far from a trading post in a nearby town.

Tearis lead a small village of out-casts, banished, and the convicted. He fought hard and worked harder to be a good leader and would never let harm come to his people. Often when a guild is created, the leader is deemed so for being the best fighter, bravest warrior, and most knowledgeable in the village. If someone were to challenge the leader and win, or the leader is no longer able to protect his people and his place as leader, he will often leave to keep his dignity in tact.

Tearis’ village took in those out-casts, making his guild gain a quick reputation of one that is not to be reckoned with. Especially since most guilds do not take in all races, but for Tearis, he prefers power, strength, and loyalty to a single race. All were welcome if found worthy.

He was known for being reckless, cold-hearted, and would not be more bothered by killing a man then he would breathing or eating. He was known by his guild for being fiercely loyal and would protect his people as a man would his woman and child. He had also been known to quite a lady’s man and being invited into his bed was a war between women every night. He will be the first to tell you that he fully enjoys watching two women fight over which he is to bed.

He is handsome, but not in a normal sense. He has scars along his chin and many over his body from countless battles. The signature Dark Elvin white hair and white eyes are always watching everything around him and his guild. He had the body of a warrior and the strength of a berserker. It was not surprising that most women that like the ‘dangerous type’ fell in love with him instantly. Though, through all of the illusions that these woman have, he will still boot them from his bed in the morning without a second thought. Not even a thank you.

The thought made him smile, seeing how he was so close to doing the very deed.

Interrupting his musings, a woman came into his bedchamber and stopped short, quickly spinning and averting her face from the naked form on the bed. Annoyed that he didn’t know that she had even been in the dwelling in the first place, he didn’t move to cover himself.

“What?” he said impatiently, not even looking at her he stared at the ceiling, his arms behind his head.

“Beg your pardon, my lord, but there are a few travelers here that would like to have a word with you.” she stammered, bowing to the wall, her back still turned as not to see his nakedness.

“Very well.” Tearis said, indicating that he was dismissing her.

He moved off the bed, not bothering to be careful or quiet and quickly dressed, securing his sword at his side. When he got outside and spotted the travelers, a small group of four, waiting around a nearby camp fire. He kept an alert hand on his sword just incase it was an assassination attempt, since it would not have been the first time. As he drew closer though, he carefully sized up each of the small crowd and decided that he was in no danger.

“Hail, I am the leader of this village.” All but one of the travelers looked up at his greeting. The one that didn’t was a small form covered from head to toe, even a black vial over their face. A human man, which is an odd thing to see around the area, was the one to approach Tearis with an out stretched hand. He had an air of refinement to him as he got closer, Tearis could see that his skin was untouched by battle or even a few days hardship. His brown hair nicely groomed and steel gray eyes showed no signs of knowledge in warfare. His two companions however seemed to have been in every battle since time. They were twins and would have been impossible to tell apart if one had not had a jagged scar across his face, leaving one eye blind.

“Hail, Lord Hollowsoul, I am Sir Kane Carditour. These two,” The human explained, pointing to the two ogres that flanked each side of him. “Are Annole and Gront, my travel companions.” The two giants each gave a nod at the mention of their names, but remained expressionless. Kane did not bother to introduce the small covered form. That was common with royalty if they are traveling with a slave.

Kane explained that they had come from a village in the Brunswick, but were no longer welcome. Tearis didn’t bother to ask any further questions. It was known around Edinburgh that he took in outcasts without judgment. It didn’t matter to him why they had landed in his village. All that mattered was what would benefit him and his people. The two brutes were always welcome to Tearis because of their strength, which was always needed. Kane, who turned out to be a great Fletcher, was also welcomed into the guild.

The guild pitched in to build Kane and his slave a home and the twins went to the barracks with the other fighters. In no time at all, the small group had been comfortably integrated into the guild.
